What causes verrucae?
Verrucae, which are part of the wart family, typically appear on the soles of the feet or around the toes.
They are caused by the highly contagious Human Papilloma Virus. The likelihood of spontaneous resolution or treatment response depends on various factors, including age, duration of the verruca, its location on the body, and specific type of HPV involved.
The HPV virus creates a microenvironment in the skin that allows it to thrive while evading the immune system. So the body doesn't realise it's even there.

Individuals with a weakened immune system,
are more likely to develop warts and verrucas and may find them more difficult to treat.
This common skin infection spreads easily through direct contact with an infected person or contaminated surfaces, particularly damp areas like swimming pools and gym changing rooms. The virus can enter the skin through tiny openings, such as cuts or pores that may be exposed after soaking in water.
Clinical evidence indicates that the longer the infection persists, the lower the chances of successful treatment. Specifically, verrucas on the feet are particularly challenging to resolve; statistics show that 42% will disappear within six months, but if they remain for longer than that, the likelihood of clearing up without treatment drops to just 8%.
Although warts and verrucas are generally harmless and not life-threatening, they can be painful, especially in weight-bearing areas, limiting daily activities. This situation leaves many long-term sufferers in the UK with few treatment options.
To effectively treat verrucas, it's essential to stimulate the body's immune response instead of merely destroying the infected tissue.
